Some of our closest Tibetan friends and partners in the work here just had a new baby girl. She doesn't have a name yet because in Tibetan and Nepali culture you usually wait a few days (up to a few months) before giving the baby a name for many reasons. One of the reasons is because if your family is Hindu or Buddhist you need to wait for the Lama or Priest to come and bless the baby and give it a name. In this case, the family are Christians but they are waiting to hear suggestions from their family and pastor and church family before deciding on a name. So for now, they just call the baby, "Nani" or "poo-moo" which means "baby/small girl".
Here you can see Keane and Gracie with the baby. They loved her. They kept saying, "baby" and just wanted to touch and play with her. They were really sweet. The girl in the picture is our friend's sister, the baby's aunt.
I can't believe that Keane and Gracie were this little just 20 months ago...actually they were smaller. Keane was 1/2!!! this babies size when he was born. CRAZY!
In this family's village culture she is ONLY supposed to eat rooster meat and eggs for an entire month. She is not supposed to eat ANYTHING else (except I think she can drink tea). So her mom brought 8 roosters from the village (which is NOT easy...it is a lot of hiking and a LONG bus ride to get from their village to the city where we live) and now they are living in S and CC's backyard waiting to be eaten. Also, the meat is only allowed to be cooked in a special clay pot. I am not exactly sure why they believe and do all of this but supposedly all of the chicken meat helps the mother have enough milk for the baby (often they make the meat into soup or broth) and keeps the baby from getting an upset stomach from eating the mothers milk after she has eaten all kinds of spices or acidy foods. It is quite interesting. The funny part is that my friend doesn't really believe all of this and really wants to eat different fruits and vegetables, etc. and so since her mother is staying with her right now and preparing her meals her husband has to sneak out during the day to get her fruit and veggies and serve them to her when her mother isn't looking. It is so funny.
